Team Fat Otter Race Reports

Since the start of Team Fat Otter, it has been our intention to write race recaps after an event, not only to help us relive the adventure at a future date, but to allow others to see what we go through. Take a look at what we've done, but more importantly what we've learned.

Let me start by saying that Gerry’s High Profile Adventure camp is THE BEST! We had so much fun. Yes we did end up with a less than pimp cabin but that’s what adventure racing is all about. You deal with what you have and sometimes what you have isn’t pleasant. We also learned paddling skills, ropes, navigation, how to take care of our skin thanks to April Hernann, and many other things along the way. We did learn that Gerry has a very evil sense of humor.  His name was cursed many times as you will see in the race report below…

We stayed the night at our favorite place, Kettlebrook Farms B&B in Campbellsport, which is owned by Alice, one of the coolest ladies in the world. We did the usual, got gear ready, chatted and drank wine with Alice, and headed off to bed not too early, but not too late. Right before bed I said something to Kristen, but right now I can’t remember what it was. Her reply to me was “That is correct”, but the way she said it, I knew I recognized it from somewhere. So I googled it with my brand new iPhone 4 (yes, I’m a dork), and found that it was this….

This year's Redbird Challenge definitely proved that Matt Stewart and the Outdoor Rec group at ISU are getting better at putting on races! Everything from the grab bags to the mystery events was an improvement, even considering that the sweet, sweet mountain biking was dropped and we were on roads for the bike section. And actually, in lieu of t-shirts, we got Sigg like water bottles from H2Go that said, "Give me a map and get lost!" LOVE IT!

The Frozen, as it's called, takes place along the Ice Age Trail near Cambellsport, WI, in the North Kettle Moraine Forest, and it was absolutely the most grueling, physically demanding and mentally draining race I've ever done...and I can't wait to do it again next year! The race director and our team captain, Rod McLennan, organized the event into four divisions: solo or team (2 person), half or full distance (32/64miles). Half distance racers started at 12pm and full distance racers were let loose at 12:15pm.

This race sounded like a great way to end the season. It was a 6-8 hour race, and I was able to convince two newbies to join the team. This is the first 4 person coed race we have been in and also the first race that required support . Race day began with the pre-race meeting where we received the rules and maps. The meeting concluded with about 20 minutes to the start of the race (which we spent trying to stay warm). The first leg consisted of around a mile and a half run to the canoe put in. We got to the canoes in the middle of the pack and were quick to put in.
